  • Collision warning working “too good”

I have a R1200 GS and installed the third eye version from Innovv that directly works with the BMW mirrors of the R1300 GS model. The solution is very nicely done and the blind spot detection works pretty well. Unfortunately the collision warning does not work how I suspected. When riding in urban traffic, stopping at a traffic light or just in stop and go traffic the warning lights get triggered every time the car behind me gets closer while I already stopped (normal behaviour at a traffic light). Is this supposed to be that way? In a normal 15 minute ride in the city I easily get between 8 and 20 warnings. This way the system itself is more or less training me to ignore it because it just flashes every time I stop with no hazard at all.

Did I maybe mount it wrong or is the described behaviour the expected one?

I mounted it above the brake light with a -10 degree angle as told by the manual. There is approximately a -30 degree angle with no obstacles to the back and below. Above there is nothing. How big has to be the unblocked “view” onto the ground?

Is it possible to just deactivate the rear collision warning? I just bought it to have blind spot detection and the constant warning in city traffic is kind of distracting.

    Greetings

    Hi Helge,
Unfortunately, the Third Eye can only be switched on or off. No further settings are possible.
The Third Eye is also intended to warn you if traffic coming from behind you is approaching you too quickly. You will also experience this if you are standing still at a traffic light and a vehicle approaches you from behind at a certain speed. This is also a collision warning. The Third Eye therefore functions as it should.
Incidentally, there is a difference in how the Third Eye gives a warning. If one of the LEDs is constantly on, it is a blind spot warning. If both LEDs are flashing, a vehicle is approaching you quickly from behind.
Also see my video on https://youtu.be/V8LwaErcInA
In this video, the LEDs are placed at the oil reservoirs of the clutch and front brake
The position where you have placed the Third Eye is correct.
I mounted my Third Eye on a K1600 GT, see the link for pictures of this installation.

Thank you Hans! You basically confirm my doubt. In your video one can see clearly that a collision warning is triggered, even though there is no danger at all. :-/

        Hi Helge,
I’m glad that things have become clearer now.

After a couple of rides additional testing, I highly suggest offering the customers a way to deactivate the collision warning (as an optional function). The blind spot detection works fine and I am very satisfied with both the hardware as well as the behaviour of the software.

The collision warning on the other hand is very annoying because it causes the system to blink very frequently. Basically every at every crossroad when there is traffic. In my point of view a system that is warning me constantly even though there is no threat at all is a failure and I would be glad to be able to deactivate it. Especially at night it is not only annoying but disturbing as well.

At the end I am not sure whether to keep the system or go back to riding without it, because the BSD is good.

    Best regards

    Helge
