    BMW Canbus Issues

Posted by donatello on 2025-06-17 at 23:23

My “switched live” source is from a Canbus socket that was used for the BMW navigation system. However, the N1 starts normally with ignition on, but when starting the engine it senses the brief power off, and shuts down. The only way to avoid this is to a) start immediately without a pause, or b) start the engine again.

Does anyone else have the same or similar issue with Canbus connections? Should they be avoided?

    Thanks.

    Hi Roy,
When starting the engine, a lot of voltage is needed for the starter motor. That is why many accessories are temporarily switched off during starting.
I suspect that the navigation power is also switched off since the BMW navigation (=Garmin) has a battery and can therefore temporarily be without power.

I have connected the switched power to the connector for the top case on my BMW (k1600GT/2018). This connector is located under the pillion seat

      Thanks for the reply.

The odd thing is that if the head unit had a setting that looked for 5 seconds loss of power before making a shutdown decision it would make more sense. Without this the unit switches off permanently (even if the bike is running) and will not return to life unless I set the crash setting to trigger – then I can slap the head unit to bring it back to life. However this is not desirable.

I have a BWM F900XR. Forums talk (not specific to INNOVV) of cutting into the brake light wire from the loom, which is undesirable. There is a small fuse box under the seat with two micro fuses which may be an option, but not sufficient space for a fuse spur.

    Hi Roy,
Connecting to a brake light is not an option. After all, it only has power when you brake.
Lighting your number plate is a better option. Otherwise, it will be a search for which switched wire keeps power when starting.
