wiring the K7 to BMW r1250 RT
Posted by asp on 2025-07-02 at 22:36Hi All – I am wiring the K7 into my BMW r 1250RT and I would like to know how to connect the red and black cables directly to the battery, Has anyone done it, recommendations and how to proceed and access the battery without causing damages

On the R1250GSA the battery is behind a plastic cover on the righthand side of the bike, is the RT the same?
If it is, then just to the right of the battery there is an easily accessible terminal/post that the positive of the battery connects directly to. You connect your positive lead for the K7 to this. I can’t remember if there is a common earth that the battery’s negative terminal connects to, I seem to remember I connected the Negative lead directly to the battery Negative terminal on my R1250GSA.
If no one else comes back with a suitable reply, I’ll be riding a R1250RT sometime in the next couple of weeks that has a K7 fitted, if I have time I’ll have a quick look to see how it’s connected.

yes the battery is on the right side, but I’m afraid to directly connect the positive and negative of the K7 without first disconnecting the battery terminals

Hi Antonio,
It is safe to remove the terminals, but you must removed the negative terminal first to avoid accidently shorting the positive terminal to the chassis either through yourself or the tools you are using.
The advice in any good manual is to:
To safely disconnect a car (or motorcycle) battery, first, turn off the ignition and remove the key. Then, locate the battery terminals, which are typically marked with + (positive) and – (negative) symbols. Always disconnect the negative terminal first, followed by the positive terminal. This sequence helps prevent electrical shorts. When reconnecting, reverse the process, connecting the positive terminal first, then the negative.
You will find that as you disconnect the negative terminal it may spark slightly, and it’ll do the same when you reconnect it. This due to there being some very low current devices that are live on the bike even when the ignition is off.
I have done this loads of times and not had any problems.
If you are still unsure then I strongly advice taking your bike to a good mechanic or auto electrician and get them to do it.
