BWW 1250RT NEW INSTALL
Hi,
Here is my story.
I have just purchased a Third Eye (mirror) system having watched many youtube videos and being very impressed with what I saw.
My kit arrived a few days ago and I proceeded to mount it on my bike.
I wanted to make it look as O.E.M as possible which involved a lot of dismantling of the bike.
I mounted the Radar unit where the reflector sits just above the rear number plate which involved moving the reflector to below the number plate. I also shortened the supplied bracket to move the unit back a bit so that it sits in the space above the plate and does not protrude.
I then dismantled the rack, grab handles, plastic cover etc above the rear light to gain access to where I wanted to run the cable. I drilled a hole through the plastic from the rear into the void where te rear light cables attach. The hole has to be large enough to pass the radar unit connector through. I then sealed this once installed with a grommet.
There is an excessive amount of cable length available to connect the radar to the main unit, which I mounted on top of the ECU under the riders seat. Cable run was fairly easy for this following the line of the frame under the passenger and riders seat, cable tied along the way.
The RT has a perfect spot on the inside edge of the mirror glass to mount the led warning lights, almost as though it was designed for this.
There is a lot of plastic to dismantle on the tank and side pockets to feed the wires up around the rear of the loudspeakers which also required to be removed and then through into the mirrors after removing the rear housing and unscrewing the mirrors themselves. Attachment is via the 3M double sided pads supplied and is a great fit and does not obscure the rear view from the mirrors.
A good supply of cable ties is required to do this job properly.
I took the switched supply from the accessory socket forward of the fuel tank and ran it back under the plastic tank cover following the same route as the led cables to the main unit.
This supply is on the bike canbus system and can easily supply the 300mah required and is protected with a supplied inline 3 amp fuse which I replaced with a 2 amp fuse probably still too big in my opinion.
\after putting everything back together I went out for a test ride.
This is where I think I have been very unlucky!
Despite setting it up as per the manual with the radar unit in my case 83cm above the ground and a 10 degree downward inclination, the test gave strange random results!
These ranged from not picking up vehicles passing on either side to sometimes picking up vehicles and alerting correctly their location to sometimes picking up vehicles but alerting them on the WRONG side!
Very strange and definitely unreliable.
I entered into online conversation with Innovv support, someone with the interesting name of “Jelly” so far, he as been extremely helpful!
Despite the time difference between where I am in the U.K. and his location he talked me through some tests to try to establish the problem.
This has resulted in this morning my receiving a message that he is sending me a new radar unit.
So far 10/10 to Innovv support they have been great!
I think I have probably just been unlucky and received a faulty unit, I’ll post up what happens when I receive the replacement but first impressions of how this company helps you if things go wrong is very good!
