  • Can I turn on K7 without connecting the yellow wire to the ignition?

I wanted to do a test run with my K7 (check if everything is working, update firmware, check what cammeras placement would be the best). But when I have just wired red&black cables to motorcycle’s battery, it does not turn on.

I have not connected the yellow cable as it is not so easy to get access to some light/etc bare cable on my bike without actually messing with the fairings and cable covers. Wanted to do that AFTER I will check the system and decide where I want put what (but for that I need to check view angles from the cameras).

My understanding is the yellow AcC wire is the primary source of power. It turns the system on and off. While it is off it uses power from the battery through the other lead to provide power for the radar function until the voltage drops to 12.5.

So, you have to connect the yellow at a minimum. The other is optional, but Iโ€™m guessing.

I used Wago connectors to make wiring easy

    Hi Adam,
The yellow wire is not the primary power source, those are the red and black.
The yellow wire is only a switch wire to switch the K7 on or off. You can connect this wire to the red wire during testing. If you want the K7 to switch off again, disconnect the yellow wire from your red wire.
In any case, do not use Scotch Lock connectors. These will eventually cut through your cable due to the vibration of the wiring.
Wago connectors are a good option. The best option is to solder, then you do not have to cut any cables.

Below is a picture of a Scotch Lock connector (worthless junk)

Hans thank you for the info how I can launch my K7 unit temporairly for testing.

And thank you for the heads up about the Scotch Lock connectors… I just bought them ๐Ÿ˜…

I prefer the construction of Posi Tap connectors (pin going through the middle of the cable core vs cutting isolation) but they are not available in my country… would have to wait +2 weeks for delivery. Also I could not find Wago pass-through connectors (only those that connect end of cables), could you recommend some model?

      Hi Adam,
The Wago connectors are more intended for the electrical installation in a home. That is why they only have a wire connection on one side. I have no experience with Wago how these remain clamped when they vibrate due to engine vibrations.
The Posi Tap seems to me a better solution. Make sure you order Posi Tap for the correct wire diameter. A Posi Tap that is too large can eventually damage your wiring (too much).
      I prefer soldering myself.

Yes, I wanted to correct the smallest size (0.5-1.5mm cable diameter).

        @Hans

        P.S.

Suggestion to consider placing some suggestions ๐Ÿ˜‰ in your instalation tutorials how actually connect yellow wire (to which cable, e.g. licence plate light, in what way – soldering, Posi Tap connector, etc). I saw on youtube wideos that Posi Tap was practically always in use.
