The Story of INNOVV H5 Helmet Camera
In 2020, the INNOVV team observed that most motorcycle vloggers used an Insta360 or GoPro on their motorcycles, and they also had a GoPro attached to the chin of their helmets to capture a different perspective in their videos.
This allowed them to create interesting content. However, the INNOVV team pondered on what kind of product would be suitable for riders who simply wanted to ride safely on the road and enjoy the beauty of nature, without being vloggers themselves. The idea emerged in 2020, but the design work for the K5 and K3 took priority, resulting in a one-year delay for the H5.
After completing the research for the K3 and K5, the INNOVV team began designing the H5.
We spoke with two groups of motorcycle riders: commuters who ride motorcycles to work and back home, and whose top concern is safety due to heavy traffic. They need a camera that is easy to use, reliable, and has a long battery life that doesn’t require frequent charging. They don’t care about fancy features that are not useful, but they need the camera to serve as proof in case of any incidents.
The question is: are GoPro and Insta360 designed for this job? The INNOVV team knows that they are not.
As you read this, you can see that GoPro and Insta360 cameras are designed to capture action and do not meet most people’s needs for ease of use, good reliability, and long recording time. INNOVV started thinking about what a camera system designed for road use would look like, and we began the R&D work.
After discussions by the INNOVV design team, the design of the H5 mainly includes the following aspects:
1.The H5 offers alternative power supply options. It has a replaceable battery that can record up to 5 hours, compared to GoPro’s 50 minutes. Alternatively, it can be connected to a USB port on a motorcycle or a power bank via a USB plug, allowing for continuous recording for hours.
2.The H5 features a single push button. Pressing it activates a vibration alarm to indicate that the camera is on and recording has started. Long-pressing the button again triggers vibrations of different frequencies to indicate that the camera is turning off.
3.The H5 incorporates a unique 360-degree rotating mount system, allowing for easy adjustment of the camera to achieve the desired angle.
4.The low-profile design of the H5 minimizes wind resistance.
5.The H5 captures video in decent 4K resolution
Will it work? This was the first time the INNOVV team had developed a helmet-only camera, and they knew it would be extremely difficult. However, the INNOVV team didn’t shy away from unfamiliar territory.
During the development process, they encountered a lot of difficulties. Since the H5 is designed for long recording time, its battery is larger than that of GoPro, making it more susceptible to wind noise during driving. Despite using noise reduction soundproofing cotton, the effect was still not ideal. As a solution, the INNOVV team added a microphone to the H5 DVR, resulting in an ideal sound recording effect.
The highly anticipated INNOVV H5 Helmet Camera, set to hit the market in 2022, has already been in existence for a year and a half. Throughout this time, we have been fortunate to receive an abundance of love and valuable feedback from riders. The H5 has become a beloved companion for many, capturing thrilling moments and ensuring safety on the road.
As we look ahead, the story of the H5 is far from over. We are committed to continuous innovation and improvement, aiming to exceed expectations with each new iteration. The successor of the H5 is currently in development, and we eagerly anticipate its arrival. Rest assured, it will be designed with the utmost care and attention to detail, tailored to meet the evolving needs of our valued riders.
The journey of the H5 continues, and we invite you to join us on this exciting adventure. Stay tuned for updates and announcements as we strive to deliver an exceptional riding experience with our future offerings. Together, let’s embark on new horizons and embrace the possibilities that lie ahead.
