Can I Use a Car Dashcam As a Motorcycle Dashcam?

INNOVV Dashcam System

As a motorcycle rider, you may wonder why motorcycle dashcams are so much more expensive than car dashcams, even though they both serve the same purpose. You may be tempted to install a car dashcam on your bike to save money, but this is not a good idea. There are some important differences between motorcycle dashcams and car dashcams that you should know before you make a decision.

1.Space and wiring: Motorcycle dashcams have to fit in a smaller and tighter space than car dashcams. They also have to deal with wiring. This means that finding a suitable installation spot for a car dashcam on a bike can be very difficult.

2. Waterproofing: Motorcycle dashcams are exposed to the weather, unlike car dashcams that are protected inside the vehicle. Therefore, motorcycle dashcams need to be waterproof and durable, usually with an IP67 rating or higher. Car dashcams do not have such a high requirement for waterproofing.

3. Interference: Motorcycle dashcams have two separate cables for the front and rear cameras. These cables are very sensitive and can be affected by the engine, heat, or other sources of interference, causing the device to malfunction. Moreover, the motorcycle dashcam DVR and cameras need to have anti-interference technology to prevent this problem. Car dashcams do not have to deal with such issues.

So, if you think you can handle these problems and have enough time to maintain your device, you can try to DIY a car dashcam on your bike. However, I strongly recommend that you choose a dashcam system that is designed for motorcycles, according to your needs and budget.

MO Tested: INNOVV K3 Motorcycle Dashcam Review

Back in 2016, I reviewed the INNOVV K1 dashcam and really liked it with one exception, a lack of weatherproofing. Next, we tested theINNOVV K2, finding it much improved. Well, the INNOVV K3 motorcycle dashcam is here, and it has reached what I consider to be peak functionality as a motorcycle dashcam. Regular commuters in urban areas should consider this as an option to use to protect yourself from false claims in the case of a mishap.
